How audio file size is calculated
Uncompressed audio (WAV, AIFF) file size is determined by four factors: sample rate (how many samples per second), bit depth (how many bits per sample), channels (mono, stereo, surround), and duration.
The formula is: sample rate x (bit depth / 8) x channels x seconds = bytes. For example, a 4-minute stereo WAV at 44.1 kHz / 24-bit is 44,100 x 3 x 2 x 240 = ~60.5 MB.
Why this matters for producers
DAW project folders grow fast. A single session with 30 stereo tracks, each 5 minutes long at 48 kHz / 24-bit, uses roughly 2.5 GB of audio alone - before bounces, backups, or alternate takes. Multiply that by dozens or hundreds of projects and storage planning becomes critical.
Understanding file sizes also matters when delivering stems to collaborators, uploading to cloud storage, or deciding between sample rates for a project.
